Social Benefits of a Retirement Community

There are many social benefits of living in a retirement community, including the chance to make new friends and take part in new activities.

A persons’s social circumstance plays a big part in their physical and emotional health. Regular socialisation and personal relationships have been proven to lead to a better quality of life. Many people encourage children to make friends and interact with others. However, this is often overlooked in the older generation. A retirement or park home community, such as Red Deer Village, allow individuals to participate in social activities. This can help to develop new friendships, improve quality of life and even increase a person’s life span. Some examples of social benefits of living in a retirement community are listed below.

Improved Self-Esteem

Meeting a group of like-minded individuals that enjoy similar hobbies and interests can help anyone feel more positive. It gives people something to look forward to and can improve a person’s general mood. Feeling useful and wanted can have a huge effect on anyone’s life, no matter what age they are. At Red Deer Village, our residents’ hub offers a variety of activities for residents on a weekly and monthly basis. This gives residents the opportunity to take part in something they enjoy, as well as meet new neighbours. The hub hosts many social, community and charity events. These include jewellery shows, Macmillan coffee mornings and Christmas lights switch-ons. The hub is also available for residents to enjoy a tea or coffee and a chat with friends through the week. We welcome you to come check our hub out!

Purpose and Belonging

Active socialising can dramatically improve someone’s quality of life and their life expectancy. Being surrounded by people who share similar interests and hobbies can help older people to make new friends and nourish existing relationships. Residents can gain a sense of community belonging by arranging to meet friends in the residents’ hub. Even being able to pop round to a neighbour’s for a visit at any time can improve someone’s wellbeing.

Improved Physical and Mental Health

Spending time with others can be uplifting and can raise self-confidence. Keeping up to date with current news and trends can also have this effect.  Many of our Red Deer Village residents attend the local Bannatyne’s gym in Stepps together, allowing for time with friends whilst also getting fit. Our courtesy shuttle bus can also help to make life easier. Alistair, our bus driver, takes residents to shop for their weekly groceries from local supermarkets. Alistair also takes residents on a monthly outing of their choice. Hence, this allows residents to get out and enjoy a day with neighbours and to see somewhere new.

Anything that contributes to someone’s self-esteem, self-confidence or a positive mental viewpoint can release healthy chemicals in the body. These help the body to fight off disease and illness, while also making someone feel better. Interaction and engagement also helps to keep the brain agile. Feeling lonely can unfortunately be very unhealthy and can lead to depression. And so, at Red Deer Village, you never have to be!
